The T-shirt is one of the symbols of American casual fashion. If you can say it, you can get it on a T-shirt. Popularized by U.S. Navy sailors during the first two world wars, the T-shirt has become an essential element of the American wardrobe and psyche.

In 1913, the United States Navy issued short sleeved, white cotton crewneck undershirts to all sailors, the start of the t-shirt love affair. Sailors returning home from World War I (1914–18) had grown to prefer the T-shirt to the woolen undershirt that had been the most typical undergarment since 1880. The light weight and soft feel helped in its growth along with modern printing techniques, make printing designs easy and affordable. The popularity of the t-shirt grew tremendously outside the military, also. By World War II (1939–45), twelve million men were wearing the T-shirts and its popularity continued to grow. News photographs and newsreels showed sailors and soldiers working in only pants and T-shirts. Underwear was exposed to the American public for the first time. By the end of the war, America had become quite used to the display of American muscle under a thin layer of white T-shirt. Now T-shirts come in many different colors and can say pretty much anything you wish to express.
